Retinal Surgeries

Types of Retinal Surgeries

Vitreous Excision

This is the most important and major surgery in retinal surgeries. It involves removing the vitreous gel from the main cavity of the eye and eliminating any obstacles to vision, such as vitreous hemorrhage, subretinal hemorrhage, or epiretinal membranes. The retina is then repositioned to its original position by injecting temporary

materials during the surgery and performing laser treatment to assist the retina in staying in place. Another substance may be injected into the eye for a certain period, such as silicone oil or certain gases. This procedure helps treat complex retinal detachments, vitreous hemorrhages, complications of diabetic retinopathy, macular holes, and complications of cataract surgeries.

External Retinal Buckling

This procedure involves placing a buckle around the eye and externally manipulating the retina using cooling. It is suitable for cases of recent retinal detachment that haven’t progressed to the stage of membranes or complications in the retina.

Pneumatic Retinopexy

This procedure involves injecting air or gas to treat emergency cases of retinal detachment within hours of detachment occurrence. It often yields good results in most cases and saves the physician and patient the cost of more complex surgeries.
